May Swenson - Al principio, al final

nunca igualadas,

y que nos va a dar,
hasta que rompa,
oh ¿qué

sorpresas, libertades, abismos?
¡Sentir, sentir!
Ser el instrumento

y la herida de la emoción.
Estar abierto a la emoción
en el pecho que explota, la ola.

Versión de Tom Maver

AT FIRST, AT LAST

At first the dips are shallow,
the peaks ever higher.
Until at last the peaks

are lower.
The valleys deepen.
It is a wave

that mounts and recoils.
Coming then to shadows
on the slopes,

rifts in the concaves,
what is there to do
but lie open-eyed and love

the wave? The wave that gave us
high joys
never again to be matched,

and shall give us,
till it breaks,
oh what

surprises, releases, abysses?
To feel! To feel!
To be the instrument

and the wound of feeling.
To lie open to feeling
on the exploding breast, the wave.

May Swenson - La noche anterior al viaje

(Utah, EEUU, 1913 - Delaware, EEUU, 1989)

Night before the journey

It is the last night of the world.
I am allowed once more to show my love.
I place a jewel on a cushion.
I make a juggler’s trick.
I become a graceful best to play with you.

See here something precious, something dazzling:
A garden to be your home,
vast and with every fruit.
The air of mountains for your garment.
The sun to be your servant.
A magic water for you to bathe in
and step forth immortal.

But it is the last night of the world,
and time itself is dying.
Tomorrow my love, locked in the box of my body,
will be shipped away.

May Swenson - La equilibrista

La equilibrista

Estoy yendo hacia vos
siempre
el empeine sobre la cuerda temblorosa
me inclino
pero nunca miro abajo
mis ojos no sonríen
inmunes al sueño
y al peligro

Estoy yendo hacia vos

yendo hacia vos siempre

Equilibrist

I’m coming toward you
always
instep on the quivering wire
leaning aside
but never looking down
eyes unsmiling
immune to sleep
or hazard

I’m coming toward you

Always your pallid image leaps
behind the bars of distance
where merge sea and sky

Not setting with the sun
nor waning with the moon
your torso centaur-like
is prancing
upon my mind’s rim

Fiercely taking aim
my body is a sharpened dart
of longing
coming toward you always
